A Women’s Economy: Can Women Revolutionize the Workforce? My Conversation with Bri Seeley.

When it comes to the workplace, women have made strides—but how far have we really come? Despite decades of progress, we’re still grappling with issues like unequal pay, limited opportunities, and systemic barriers that hold women back from living fulfilling, self-directed lives.

In my recent conversation with TEDx speaker and success designer Bri Seeley, we explored these challenges and asked a bigger question: how can women revolutionize the workforce? Bri shared her powerful story of breaking free from societal norms and offered practical, empowering steps for women to redefine success and claim their worth.

Why the Wage Gap Still Exists

One of the most shocking statistics we discussed was this: in 2023, women still earn only 83% of what men are paid for the same work. Even as women have entered the workforce in greater numbers, pay equity remains elusive.

Bri highlighted why these disparities persist—and why they might even get worse. But instead of focusing on fixing a broken system, Bri suggested that women channel their energy into building something entirely new.

“The building is on fire,” she told me. “Why are we trying to break the ceiling instead of leaving and creating something better?”

Redefining Success on Our Terms

One of the most powerful moments in our conversation was when Bri explained the connection between past decisions and present realities. “Everything about your life right now reflects choices you’ve made in the past,” she said. “If you want something different, you have to start making decisions today as your future self would.”

That concept really stuck with me. How often do we make decisions based on fear, comfort, or what society tells us we should do? For Bri—and for me—true empowerment begins when we stop living by others’ rules and start prioritizing our own goals, dreams, and well-being.

How We Can Lead Change

If you’re feeling stuck or ready to rewrite the rules of your life, here are a few practical steps inspired by my conversation with Bri:

  1. Ask yourself, “Is this mine?” Whether it’s an expectation, belief, or responsibility, get clear on what truly belongs to you. If it doesn’t, let it go.

  2. Ask for what you want. Whether it’s a raise, a better opportunity, or more support, don’t be afraid to speak up. As Bri reminded me, nearly half of women have never asked for a raise. It’s time to change that.

  3. Support women-led businesses. Redirect your time, money, and energy to spaces where women are leading and creating ethical, innovative work environments.

  4. Make decisions as your future self. Who is the woman you want to become? What choices would she make? Start aligning your actions today with her vision.

  5. Stop settling for “just enough.” Dream bigger. Your goals and aspirations don’t have to fit within anyone else’s limits.
