Aging: How do we stay visible and vital as we age? My Conversation with Kamrin Huban.
Aging is a privilege—but it comes with its challenges, especially for women. In a recent episode of Curious Life of a Childfree Woman, I spoke with Kamrin Huban, a leadership coach for women over 50 and founder of 50 Not Dead. Together, we explored how societal expectations shape our views on aging, why visibility matters, and how connection across generations can help us thrive in our later years.
Here’s what stood out to me about our conversation—and why it matters for anyone rethinking what it means to age well.
The Shifting Narrative of Aging
Kamrin emphasized how aging often comes with societal narratives that make women feel less visible and less valued. She explained that while society might celebrate youth, we have the opportunity to rewrite the narrative and embrace the wealth of experience and wisdom that comes with age.
Her perspective is clear: Aging isn’t about fading into the background—it’s about stepping into a new chapter with confidence.
The Fear of Invisibility
For many women, the fear of becoming invisible as they age is real. Whether it’s feeling overlooked in professional settings or experiencing cultural attitudes that diminish older women’s value, these challenges are deeply felt. Kamrin reminded me that staying visible isn’t just about how we look—though we talked candidly about hair dye, makeup, and societal beauty standards—it’s also about making choices that keep us actively engaged in our lives and communities.
Actionable Steps to Stay Visible & Connected
Embrace Your Value: Reflect on your unique experiences and the contributions you bring to the table. Whether it’s in work, relationships, or personal growth, confidence starts with recognizing your worth.
Seek Out Mentorship: Don’t be afraid to connect with people of different ages. Mentorship can be reciprocal—both learning from and offering guidance to others.
Build Your Network: Think of networking as relationship-building, not a means to an end. Start conversations with people you admire or share interests with, and keep those relationships alive.
Take Risks: Whether it’s trying something new professionally or personally, age shouldn’t be a barrier to pursuing curiosity and bold moves.
Let’s Stay Curious Together.
Kamrin’s message was both inspiring and deeply practical: Women can—and should—challenge the narratives that diminish their value as they age. By staying visible, building connections, and embracing each phase of life, we can redefine what aging looks like for ourselves and others.
